Why choose this program at Riverland?

The Practical Nursing Program at Riverland Community College is approved by the Minnesota Board of Nursing and is accredited by the Accreditation Commission of Education in Nursing ACEN. www.acenursing.org

Nursing is consistently a high paying, much sought after career. This program offers an outstanding accredited curriculum taught by outstanding faculty- providing you with an excellent learning environment.

As a returning student working my way back into the workforce after being home with children, what I appreciated most about the program was its small size and focus on the student as an individual. I very much appreciated the experienced, supportive staff and the nurturing environment. Both made my transition to professional nurse and back to the workforce positive and rewarding.
Nathan Hauber

Riverland offers two program options:

What will I study?

  • Graduates of the Practical Nursing Program will integrate general education, including science coursework, with the discipline of nursing coursework (PNUR) as the basis for nursing practice and ongoing life-long learning.
  • The Practical Nursing Program will prepare the student with the knowledge, skills, and values of a practical nurse (PN) for entry-level practice. After approval by the Minnesota Board of Nursing, the student will then be eligible to take the licensing examination for the licensed practical nurse (NCLEX-PN). The student is eligible to enter practice when licensed and/or may apply to the Nursing (RN Track) program with advanced.

Are there any special scholarships related to this program I can apply for?

To help meet the cost of nursing school, the College awarded me Financial Aid grants, and various scholarships such as The Bikers of Student Success, Elizabeth Moen Nursing Scholarship, and Stipend Scholarship. Through the program, I became a member of Phi Theta Kappa honor society, and was named to the ALL-Minnesota Academic Team in 2016. This is great program and I’m thankful for all of the amazing faculty members that enriched my nursing school experience.

Application / Requirements

Meeting qualifications for the practical nursing program does not ensure admission to the program.  There is a separate application to apply to the Practical Nursing (PN) program. Based on the number of applicants and the number of class seats available, the Nursing Program Admission Committee will review applications following the deadline. All applicants will receive a letter of notification of their application status.

General education courses may be taken prior to acceptance into the nursing program; however, if the student has not completed them at that time, they must be taken in specific semesters during the one year program.

PLEASE NOTE:  Students must have been admitted to the nursing program before they can register for any PNUR course.
