How to Obtain a Tax Transcript

Due to federal regulations, Riverland Community College will NOT accept a copy of any filed 1040 form. Only a Federal Tax Return Transcript from the IRS is acceptable documentation.

There are a number of ways to obtain a copy of your Federal Tax Return Transcript from the IRS. Some methods may involve significant delays, so please plan ahead:

  1. Online (Preferred)

    • Available at www.irs.gov
    • Click on “Get Your Tax Record”
    • Choose “Get Transcript Online.” You will need a credit card, mortgage, loan, or mobile phone account in your name for verification, plus an email for secure code delivery. If unavailable, use another method.
    • Log in after creating your account. Choose “Higher Education/Student Aid” when asked for a reason.
    • Under RETURN TRANSCRIPT, choose the appropriate tax year. Disable your browser’s pop-up blocker.
  2. Online request by mail

    • Available at www.irs.gov
    • Click on “Get Your Tax Record”
    • Choose “Get Transcript By Mail.” Note: If you moved since filing, the transcript will be mailed to the IRS address on file. Use another option if needed.
    • Enter your information (may require ZIP+4, e.g., 55912-1234)
    • Select “Return Transcript” and the correct tax year.
  3. Telephone request (5–10 days after request)

    • Automated attendant: 1-800-908-9946
    • Live person (long wait times): 1-800-829-1040. May allow fax delivery instead of mail.
  4. Paper Request by mail (10 business days after received by IRS)

    • Download Form 4506-T
    • Click on “Current Products”
    • Complete the form and request a “Return Transcript.”
    • Submit by mail or fax. Address and fax numbers are listed on page 2 of the form.
