Gregory J. Rose was born in Easton, Pennsylvania and is an East Coast native now living in the Midwest. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from The Pennsylvania State University in 2000 and his Master of Fine Arts from the University of Minnesota in 2004, both in Drawing and Painting. Gregory has been teaching for Minnesota State since 2003 and is currently Fine Arts faculty at Minneapolis Community and Technical College. His work has been exhibited in New York, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and internationally in Italy, Mexico, and Africa.

Out of the Darkness includes work created before and after a pivotal trip to Senegal, Africa. This experience influenced both his artistic vision and curatorial work in Change is God: Root Among the Stars, Black Abstraction in the Midwest.

The work explores themes of PTSD, trauma, and lived experience, reflecting how these elements shape creative practice. It also responds to current social and cultural shifts within the Black experience and the broader diaspora.
