What type of student is the Business FlexPace™ certificate designed for?
This program is for working adults who can’t attend traditional classes, want to advance their careers or switch roles, and are motivated self-starters. You'll move through the program with the same group of students.
What if I only want to take some of the classes in the program?
You must complete at least 12 credits at Riverland to earn the certificate. If you’ve already taken a course, you can skip it during that term. You may also take CLEP exams to earn credit for certain classes.
I’ve never taken an online class. How will I know what to do?
The first course in the sequence is BUSA1002: Introduction to Online Learning. It teaches you how to succeed in online courses and how to use the tools you’ll need.
How do I know which classes to take?
Visit the FlexPace™ webpage and check the Course List tab for each semester’s classes. You'll register for all your classes at once each semester.
How long does each class last?
3-credit classes last 5–6 weeks, 4-credit classes last 7–8 weeks, and the 1-credit class lasts 4 weeks.
How much time should I expect to spend studying each week?
Plan for about 24 hours per week for a six-week class. On average, students spend 18 hours weekly. Your study time depends on your skills, background, and how quickly you grasp the material.
What kind of grades do I need to succeed?
This is a mastery-based program. Once you score 70 percent or higher on an activity, you move on. If you don’t, you’ll complete additional materials until mastery is achieved.
Students must maintain a 2.0 GPA and successfully complete at least 67% of attempted credits to remain in good standing and keep financial aid eligibility.
Can I earn a two-year or four-year degree after the certificate?
Yes. All courses in the Business Certificate FlexPace™ count toward the AS Business Transfer Pathway. This degree is available in the FlexPace™ format and is transferable to institutions like MSU Mankato and others.
What if I have college credits from another institution?
If you pursue the AS Business Transfer Pathway after the certificate, your prior credits will be evaluated when you declare the major.
Does my employer offer tuition reimbursement?
Check with your employer to see if they offer this benefit.
How do I start the admission process?
Use the FlexPace™ Advising Guide and follow the “Steps to Enroll.” Spots are limited to 24 students per cohort, so early enrollment is encouraged.
Where do I find and purchase my textbooks?
Before the semester starts, textbook information is posted on the College Bookstore page. You can order online and have them shipped, or pick them up at the Albert Lea, Austin, or Owatonna campuses.
