This course for non-native speakers of English focuses on developing pronunciation and speaking skills. Learners will practice clear and accurate pronunciation, syllable stress, phrase rhythm, and rising and falling intonation of questions and statements. Learners will also practice a variety of speaking strategies for communicating in an academic environment, interacting in conversations and discussions and giving presentations. All students are expected to schedule time and meet with their tutors for 2 hours each week outside of class time in order to further practice and reinforce skills practiced in class. All new Riverland students enrolling in English language courses will be given a pronunciation assessment upon entrance by a qualified faculty member. This course may be repeated. This course will be graded on a pass/no credit basis. Passing will require an 85% mastery of learning outcomes based upon a departmentally-devised standard assessment.
