Alice Holst: Why I Give
“There’s really nothing more important in the universe except love, first, and education, second.”
— Alice Holst, Riverland alum and donor
Alice has been a long-time supporter of Riverland. After high school, she attended a four-year university but quickly realized it was not affordable. She returned home and enrolled at Austin State Junior College, now Riverland, because of the lower cost.
While attending college, Alice worked both on campus and at a local bank to pay for her education.
Years later, she volunteered at the Riverland Foundation’s first fundraising event, Dining for Dollars. There, she met a student whose experience reminded her of her own. That moment inspired her to give, and she has continued supporting students ever since.
Alice remains active in the Riverland community. She received the 2016 Distinguished Alumni Award, serves on the Foundation Board, and has performed in several Riverland and Summerset Theatre productions. She also built a successful 47-year career in banking.
Alice believes education is important for everyone, no matter their career path. She hopes more people discover the opportunities Riverland offers.
“When resources became available for me to support different causes, Riverland was at the top of my list. It has been one of the best kept secrets in Austin for a long time.”
