Who Is Blaze?

Blaze isn’t just a mascot, they’re a spark of energy, pride, and belonging that lives at the heart of Riverland Community College. Whether they’re leading cheers at a Blue Devils game, high-fiving students in the hallway, or showing up at community events, Blaze brings people together with enthusiasm, humor, and a whole lot of heart.

Blaze represents what it means to be Riverland: inclusive, supportive, and always ready to lift each other up.

How Did Blaze Get Their Name?

Blaze’s name came directly from the Riverland community.

When it was time to name the college’s mascot, Riverland launched a campus-wide naming contest, inviting students and employees to submit ideas that reflected the spirit of the Blue Devils and the energy of the college. The response was strong, creative, thoughtful, and full of personality.

After reviewing submissions, a group of finalists was selected and shared back with the college for voting. From there, the Riverland community made the final call.

Blaze rose to the top.

The name stood out because it captured multiple layers of meaning that resonated with voters:

  • Energy and momentum – the drive students bring to their education
  • Passion and pride – the Blue Devil spirit seen across campus
  • Light and direction – the idea that Riverland helps students find their path forward

It wasn’t just a catchy name, it felt like Riverland.

From that moment on, Blaze became more than a mascot name. It became a symbol of the spark that lives in every Riverland student, employee, and community member.
