Blue Devils Women's Basketball

2012-2013 Season Preview

Coach Suzy Hebrink in entering her 14th year as head coach. The Lady Devils have averaged 15 wins over the last 5 seasons and are looking to be every bit as competitive again this year. With only 8 players on the roster, all will have to be major contributors.

"This year we have some speed, some size, and some shooters. With only eight players everyone improves tremendously which is always good." Says Hebrink, "We have great experience, with three returning starters along with aggressive freshman that will give us the balance we need. Our first goal, of course, is to make it to post season play."

The lady devils haven't been back to the state tournament in three years. The last appearance was the record breaking season in 2009 (23-7) where the Lady Devils were Conference, State and Regional runner-ups. Last season the Blue Devil Women finished tied for fourth in the conference, (13-14 overall) but lost out to Fergus Falls who won the tie break procedure bumping Riverland out of post season play.

Last season, sophomore Rebecca Aase (6'2, center) from Austin, replaced much of the scoring gap left by all time leading scorer (1183 career points) and second team All-American Krista Viehauser. Aase's 14.5 ppg and 9 rebounds, along with numerous blocked shots, helped control the paint at both ends of the floor. Aase was also honored with All MCAC, All - State and Academic All-American awards for the 2011-12 season.

Skylar Anderson, (5'5 combo guard) from Albert Lea, returns with experience and defensive intensity. Skylar's ability to attack the basket and get the ball to the open player will help fuel the lady devils offense.

Sophia Hebrink (5'10 wing) from Austin, is the most versatile player returning this season. As a freshman, Hebrink led the team in steals and assists and was a scoring threat from the perimeter. Hebrink's court length and ability to move the ball down the floor will give the team depth at different positions.

"Together these 3 sophomores provide great leadership. As our captains we expect them to lead by example on and off the court," says coach, Suzy Hebrink. Their experience along with a quick learning curve, for our freshman, will be critical to our success this season."

Expected to contribute right away are 5 key freshman. Point guard, Victoria Larson, (Bangor, Wisconsin) has great court awareness. She can shoot, handle the ball, and find the open player. Two guard, Brittany (Zuniga, Albert Lea, MN) has incredible speed, and the ability to come up with the ball. Wing player, Jazmin Wilson (Golden Valley, MN) is a strong, tenacious player. Her defense and ability to attack the basket will be key as a perimeter player. Morgan Lindenfelser (Monticello, MN) is long and quick. She can pressure defensively, rebound, and finish around the hoop which gives the Lady Devils exactly what they need at the wing position. Nicole Swanson (Spring Valley, MN) gives depth to the post position. Nicole can do what will be needed in the post... score down low, rebound, and cause defensive miss matches.

The Blue Devils kick off their season with an Alumni game for both men and women Saturday, October 27 - game times 2:00 & 4:00. The Lady Devils have one last chance to gear up with a scrimmage against Luther College, Tuesday October 30 at home before they head to their season opener in Worthington November 3rd & 4th.
