Riverland Community College: a comprehensive community college with campuses located in Albert Lea, Austin, and Owatonna, student headcount of 3,800, with a FYE of 2300, a total budget of $22M.

Dean of Students/Vice President of Student Affairs: Allocated a budget of $1.9M, and supervised daily operations and duties of nine departments and forty staff members.

Director of Enrollment Services: Directed and supervised the Financial Aid and Admissions Departments of the college.

Financial Aid Administrator: Managed over $5M in student aid awards and supervised staff on three campuses.

Responsible for:
  • Collaborating with department heads within Student Affairs to provide a comprehensive array of services to students.
  • Applying a continuous improvement process to assess the effectiveness of Student Affairs programming, policy, and procedure.
  • Serving as the chief administrator of the Student Affairs division.
  • Developing and managing a $1.5 million dollar division budget.
  • Supervising directors of the following departments: Activities, Admissions, Athletics, Financial Aid, Intramural, Registration, Student Support Services (assessment, disability services, and tutoring), Counseling, and Theater. I also supervise the housing manager, three receptionists, and an administrative assistant.
  • Federal Perkins Grant and Otto Bremer Grant responsibilities.
  • Responsible for the enforcement of the Student Conduct Policy.
  • Advocating for students attending the college.
  • Chair the College Retention Committee.
  • Serving on the college administrative teams (Administrative Council and Leadership Council).
  • Chairing the Student Affairs Leadership Team, Co-chairing the Student Life Committee.
  • Acting as an ex-officio member on the college foundation.
  • Ensuring that federal, state, and Riverland policy are adhered to and upheld in all aspects of student affairs administration.
  • Representing Riverland as a member of various civic organizations.
Selected Accomplishments as Dean of Students/Vice President of Student Affairs:
  1. Developed the Policy Poster Series to educate students on college policies and procedures.
  2. Devised and implemented the GAO (Goals-Actions-Outcomes) planning process for student affairs.
  3. Created, in collaboration with faculty leadership, an effective counselor evaluation process.
  4. Facilitated a program review process for Student Affairs.
  5. Devised a systematic enrollment data collection process that is subsequently used to produce a comprehensive enrollment report.
  6. Continued to conduct research on student satisfaction, student retention, and employer satisfaction.
  7. Initiated a process to collect household items to assist international students.
  8. Convened the Student Affairs Leadership Team (SALT), a monthly meeting of department heads and supervisors, whose mission is to develop, review, and evaluate Student Affairs policy and procedure.
  9. Redesigned quarterly division meetings to consistently include professional development activities.
  10. Designed and launched the "Riverland Help Squad," teams of college staff and faculty members who greet, assist, and hand out items to students on the first day of classes.
  11. Rewrote the Student Handbook to ensure improved compliance with federal and state data privacy and due process guidelines.
  12. Originated a process for systematic assessment of student satisfaction.
  13. Stimulated research and use of "best practice" models to shape decision making in Student Affairs policy, procedure, and programming.
  14. Implemented a "feeder school" concept to focus recruiting activities at area high schools that have traditionally sent students to our college.
  15. Developed "Partners on Campus," a half-day professional development event for area agency representatives and college employees.
  16. Advanced the writing and implementation of an Enrollment Management Plan.
  17. Initiated an outreach to area home-schooled students.

Albert Lea Technical College, South Central Technical College and Riverland Community College: technical and community college that resulted from mergers that occurred in Minnesota from 1993 - 1996.

Director of Financial Aid: Managed $5M of state and federal student financial aid and supervised staff on three campuses.

Responsible for:
  • Supervising an Assistant Financial Aid Director and up to four clerical staff
  • Managing department budgets and administering over $5M state and federal student grants, loans, and work study awards.
  • Developing and implementing institutional financial aid policy and procedure.
  • Organizing responses to local and state financial aid audits.
  • Devising systems to manage student aid files and communications.
Selected Accomplishments:
  • Served on advisory board for the Educational Assistance Corporation, a student loan guarantor.
  • Achieved a 99% satisfaction rating from past college graduates for financial aid services.
  • Created brochures and communication flow systems to more clearly communicate financial aid information to students.
  • Used the most current computer technology to facilitate aid awards to late applicants, incorporating electronic funds transfer (EFT) into student loan processing, refund, and repayment functions.
  • Served as featured presenter at three statewide High School Counselor Financial Aid workshops.
  • Produced power point financial aid night presentation featured on Minnesota Association of Financial Aid Administrators' website.
  • Served on financial aid advisory board for Minnesota Higher Education Services office.
