Edelgard (Edel) Fernandez Mejia, born in Guanajuato, Mexico. Fernandez has played, officiated and coached in both Mexico and the USA. Arriving to MN in Fall of 2000, he soon found an opportunity to continue with his passion for “Futbol” (Soccer) when he became a soccer coach for the Willmar Soccer Association affiliated with the Minnesota Youth Soccer Association (MYSA) where he also served as a Referee Coordinator and Assignor and received both certifications from the United States Soccer Federation (USSF)
A few years later, in 2006 the Head Coach position at Ridgewater College became available. Ridgewater had decided to add the sport to their Division III athletic department, except they were moving soccer to a Division I. The lack of a Division of such high level in MN forced them to join the closest Division I conference which was in Iowa, making Fernandez the first Latino Coach at a 2yr college MNSCU institution.
Through these years Coach Fernandez continued his soccer career to the point that he earned a scholarship from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) to obtain his National Coaching Diploma because of the development of the soccer programs for the Willmar Community Education and Recreation and Ridgewater.
Coach Fernandez also holds a USSF grade 8 Referee and Assignor Certifications and a MSHSL Referee Certification.
