Riverland Community College (RCC) has partnered with the Minnesota Motorcycle Safety Center (MMSC) Driver and Vehicle Service (a division of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety) and community and corporate sponsors to provide one of the most comprehensive safety programs in the world. MMSC and RCC are committed to reducing motorcycle crashes, injuries, and fatalities.

Research shows that rider education is the most critical aspect of any motorcycle safety project. The MMSC and RCC offer riders of all experience levels in a Basic Riding Course, Experienced Rider Course, and Moped Training.

Motorcycle registrations begin January 1, 2007. All registrations must be accompanied by a check or credit card in order to be enrolled.

Basic Rider Course - HSER0907

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation?s Basic Rider Course is a 14.5 hour program designed to teach basic motorcycle operational skills and advanced skills such as swerving, braking and cornering, and street riding strategies. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) supplies the curriculum and materials, and instructors are MSF-certified. The course includes both classroom and on-cycle instruction, with high-quality personalized coaching, and several hours of practice riding. There is a limit of 12 per class. Register early! Classes fill very quickly!!

How do I find a class and register?

Go to the course schedules links listed at the top of this page to pick a date, time, and location of available classes. If you are 18 years or older and possess a valid motorcycle permit (from a Minnesota license exam station) you may be able to earn your motorcycle endorsement upon successful completion of the entire course.

Important Note:

• Be at least 15 years old (Parent/guardian signature is required for participants under 18 years of age)
• Possess a valid automobile instructional permit or license
• Be able to balance and ride a bicycle

• Long-sleeved shirt/jacket
• Full-fingered gloves
• Long pants with no tears or holes
• Sturdy footwear that covers the ankles
• A D.O.T. approved helmet

Frequently asked motorcycle training questions:

1. Do I need a motorcycle permit before taking the course?
   Yes. If you are over 18-years-old, you must bring your permit with you to class. No. If you are under 18-years-old, you must take the class before you can get your permit. All students under 18 MUST have a parent/guardian signature to participate.
2. How is the Basic Rider class structured?
   In this 14.5-hour course, the first 4.5-hours of the course are instructional in a classroom. A written test will be given at the end of this first class meeting. The remaining 10 hours of the course are riding. The riding skill test will be given on the last day of class.
3. Where do I go for my class and riding instruction?
   The first evening of all courses meet in the skylight room at the Riverland Community College Campus. Riding instructions will be given in the north parking lot.
4. Are motorcycles provided?
   Yes, for basic rider students. All students MUST also bring eye protection, long-sleeved shirt/jacket, full-fingered gloves, long pants with no tears or holes, sturdy footwear that covers the ankles, and a D.O.T. approved helmet for the motorcycle skills practice.
5. What if I need to cancel my registration?
   Sorry, we cannot issue refunds for cancellations received within 3 business days of the first class date. Should a class be canceled due to insufficient enrollment, you will receive a full refund. Please include 2 phone numbers and an e-mail address so that we may notify you of any changes in the status of your class.
6. Does this endorsement transfer to Wisconsin?
   Yes.

Experienced Rider Course ? HSER0904 Whether they?ve been riding for one year or twenty, riders need to keep learning. That?s where the Experienced Rider Course comes in. Riders hone their mental strategies to a razor-sharp edge in practicing advanced motorcycle handling skills on their own bikes. Certified instructors draw from student knowledge and experience to coach riders to success. Experienced riders MUST also provide proof of valid insurance and driver?s license. One companion may accompany the experienced rider student as a passenger on the bike. (5 hours)

MOPED Training Class ? HSER0900 To ride safely, moped riders need the same mental strategies a motorcyclist needs. This course is a benefit to anyone who wants to ride on two wheels. (4 classroom hours)
