The Riverland Community College president is the chief executive officer of the college, reports directly to the MnSCU Chancellor, and provides leadership and direction to students, staff, faculty and the management team. The president advises the chancellor, the staff of the Office of the Chancellor, and the Board of Trustees on matters of system policy as appropriate and monitors the implementation of MnSCU board policies. The president has administrative authority over all matters affecting the college at the operational level.
The president is Riverland Community College’s official representative to the community, the legislature, and the Governor’s office as well as institutions of public and higher education. In all dealings with people, the president serves as the foremost example of the college’s commitment to treat others with dignity, respect, and decency.
The president’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following duties:
Develops and implements the comprehensive mission of Riverland Community College, consistent with the MnSCU Board of Trustees’ mission and goals, and effectively articulates both missions to internal and external constituents.
Promotes teaching, learning, and student success through innovative approaches to basic skills development, transfer programs, professional-technical programs, workforce development programs, and student support services. The college president assures that educational programs comply with college and MnSCU policies, state and federal statutes.
Advocates for Riverland Community College to local, state, and national officials and individual donors to enhance funding for educational programs and services, facilities, and resources that enable Riverland Community College to serve students and attract and retain the high-quality faculty and staff for which it is known.
Forges partnerships and coalitions with community and area leaders and representatives of business, industry, and governmental and K-20 educational institutions.
Develops and expands programs and services that are accessible to community residents, including the region’s diverse population, throughout Riverland’s 20-county service area.
Leads collaborative efforts to identify and meet the demands for new and expanded professional technical programs and workforce training that produce a skilled workforce able to earn a sustainable living.
Leads collaborative efforts to acquire and develop property and facilities in the region to allow for growth and enhanced service in the coming decades.
Develops a cohesive leadership team that embraces the vision, mission, and tradition of excellence in teaching and learning for which Riverland Community College is known.
Promotes a culture of inquiry that promotes participatory governance and collaboration with internal constituencies.
Promotes a campus environment that respects and values the diversity, dignity, and contributions of all people.
Assures the institution’s fiscal viability through ethical accountability.
Implements successful enrollment management practices and responds to changing community demographics.
Works effectively and respectfully with the Chancellor; maintains full disclosure to the Chancellor and MnSCU Board of Trustees; keeps the Chancellor and board continuously informed of the progress and conditions of the college; attends and participates in monthly Chancellor’s Leadership Council meetings and its deliberations.
Proposes policies and procedures for the Chancellor’s and Board’s consideration; develops and implements board and administrative policies for the college; evaluates the effectiveness of college policies, rules, and procedures.
Ensures that administrative authority and responsibility are properly delegated in the event of the president’s incapacity or absence from campus; provides, in writing, the order of delegation.
Oversees the safety and security of college students, employees, and visitors.
Exercises such rights, prerogatives, and responsibilities as normally accrue to the president and chief executive officer of an institution of higher education and discharges such other responsibilities and performs such other duties as may be assigned by the Chancellor, Trustees, or required by law.
