Associate in Arts

Students who want a baccalaureate degree but need more freedom to make a decision later are able to complete general education requirements without committing to a specific major. These students may choose to earn an Associate in Arts (AA) degree at Riverland.
  • An AA degree is awarded to students who successfully complete a liberal arts and sciences curriculum.
  • An AA degree is designed to constitute the first two years of a four-year degree program.
  • Students must complete the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (MnTC), a specific set of courses encompassing 10 agreed-upon goal areas (40 credits) which satisfy the general education component of any degree program at 4-year MnSCU institutions and the University of Minnesota.
  • The remaining credits are considered electives and may be chosen from any course with a course number of 1000 or higher; one of these elective credits must be in Physical Education or Health.
  • Students who anticipate transferring to a four year college should plan an appropriate program (both general education and major requirements) with a counselor prior to and during enrollment at Riverland.

The degree in all three disciplines is designed primarily as a transfer degree, fulfilling the first two years of study for a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree in Music, Art or Theatre. Riverland Community College is one of the premier two-year colleges in the state to offer the Associate in Fine Arts degree.
