A group of staff, alumni and community members have taken this sentiment to heart by starting a committee to beautify Riverland campuses, incorporating educational themes to leave a lasting legacy.

Lowell A. F. Johnson served as Coordinator of the Evening School Program at the Austin Area Vocational Technical Institute (AAVTI), now Riverland Community College, from 1974 to 1982. With an extensive background in vocational education, Lowell provided experienced leadership at a crucial time in the school's development.

Where It All Began |
We can trace the roots of Riverland Community College back to 1940 when Austin Junior College (AJC) held the first college classes on the third floor of Austin High School. James Leonard Breedlove was there. Recently, I met with Leonard (as he was known in school). At the quiet urging of his wife Mary and his relatives, Helen and George Sinn and Esther Plehal, Leonard told his story.

A shortage of trained medical professionals is becoming a national epidemic. In the nursing field alone, the "Occupational Outlook Quarterly" Summer 2002 edition projects that between 2000 and 2010 there will be an astounding 1,400,000 new job openings, for registered nurses and 322,000 job openings for licensed practical nurses. To combat this growing healthcare worker shortage on a local level, Austin Medical Center is taking action.
