Nursing Assistant/Home Health AideThis course emphasizes the role of the nursing assistant and home health aide as a valuable member of any health care team. This course introduces concepts of basic human needs, acquaints students with the philosophy of home health and teaches basic nursing skills that will be demonstrated and practiced in the laboratory setting. This course will focus on personal care, nutrition/feeding, elimination, clean and safe environment, communication, vital signs, body mechanics, and principles related to long term and home health care. Upon successful completion of classroom/lab studies, the student will participate in a clinical experience caring for the elderly client. Background study checks will be conducted. Successful students will be eligible to take the Nurse Aide/Home Health Aide competency examination for certification and placement on the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry. This course meets application requirements for the Riverland Community College nursing program. EnrollmentEnrollment is limited. Payment for the Nursing Assistant course is due at the time of registration. You may pay in person or online through your myriverland student account. IF payment is not received you may lose your seat in the class.
Course FeesNA/HHA: This 4-credit course has two separate fees as indicated below: NOTE: Textbook will be distributed in the classroom on the first day of class. 2. State certification testing fee payable to Pearson VUE is $59 and must be paid by money order, cashier's check, or facility check. Pearson VUE is the state certification testing supply company. This payment is due on the certification test date. Further details will be presented by your instructor. First class day requirements1. Mantoux test (TB) results within 3 months of class start date. Results must be documented from the healthcare facility where the test was given. 2. Drivers license for background study submission. 3. Textbook will be distributed in the classroom on the first day of class. Mantoux Test (TB) is required for this trainingStudents must contact a medical clinic or public health agency for this test. Results must be within three months with a negative reading. Please bring results to the first day of class Results must be documented from the healthcare facility where the test was given. Background CheckMinnesota Law requires any person who provides a service that involves direct contact with patients and residents in health care facilities licensed by the Minnesota Department of Health to have a background study conducted by the state. An individual who is disqualified from having direct patient contact as a result of the background study, and whose disqualification is not set aside by the Commissioner of Health, will not be permitted to participate in clinical learning. Failure to participate in clinical will result in ineligibility to qualify for a degree in the program. 2009 Minnesota Statues Disqualifying Crimes or Conduct Class attendance is mandatory according to the MN Dept. of Health guidelinesStudents must attend all class and clinical sessions, or they will not be eligible to complete the course or take the state certification exam.HCNA Drop/add policyAdd: Students may register for this class up to 24 hours prior to the class starting based on availability. Tuition and fees are due at the time of registration. Drop: Students must drop within 5 working business days prior to the start date to receive a refund of tuition and fees. Students who drop "short term" courses for which they received financial aid will be required to repay in accordance with federal and state repayment policies. PSEO funding for high school studentsStudents are responsible for completing all necessary PSEO paperwork. Certification testing fees are not covered. PSEO students will be responsible for the $110 Riverland testing fee & $59 Pearson VUE money order. The $110 should accompany the registration and the $59 money order can be paid on the certification test date. Financial AidStudents must be registered for the Nursing Assistant course and credits locked in by the 5th day of the semester and have received an award letter from the Financial Aid Office to be eligble for financial aid. Registration must be processed no later than 5 days after the beginning of the semester. Financial Aid does not cover the $59 Pearson VUE certification test fee.

You will be notified of your acceptance to the college by Admissions. Once accepted, you will be allowed to register, based on space availability. Register for HCNA1200 Current StudentsMinnesota Nursing Assistant Registry and CertificationRiverland Community College is an approved state certification testing site. Upon successful completion of the Nursing Assistant/Home Health Aide course, students are eligible to take the National NA or NA/HHA Examination. Students must pass a written (or oral) and skills evaluation to become certified and listed on the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry.
