Step by Step Guide to Finanical Aid

Step 1 Apply for Admission     Apply Online Now»

We encourage you to visit Riverland Community College. Admissions staff will assist you in career exploration and answer your questions about coming to school.

Step 2: Apply for Financial Aid

51% of Riverland students receive financial aid! Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Here are some helpful hints:
  • Use actual copies of your tax returns when completing financial information.
  • Apply early. We recommend that you complete the FAFSA no later than May 1st.
  • Double check your answers.
  • Ask for help. Our staff will be glad to assist you with your application.
  • Release information to Riverland by printing Code #002335 and 1900 8th Avenue NW, Austin, MN 55912.
  • Use www.fafsa.ed.gov for your internet processing of your FAFSA.
  • Riverland Scholarships are available

Step 3: Student Aid Report (SAR)

By completing the FAFSA, you are applying for ALL types of state and federal financial aid. You will receive an information summary in the mail or by email after you apply for aid. These forms are very important.
  • Read them carefully; if forms are accurate, keep for your records.
  • If corrections need to be made, go to www.fafsa.ed.gov and use your pin number to access information and send corrections. Riverland financial aid staff can assist you with questions or concerns regarding corrections.

Step 4: Other Needed Documents

Students may be required to submit other documents to complete their financial aid file. Riverland will mail a request for these documents. They may include:
  • Verification Worksheets
  • Tax Returns
  • Non-Taxed Income Report
  • Other documents required for processing

  Step 5: Award Letter
  • Approximately 2 weeks after your financial aid file is complete, Riverland will mail a postcard to you explaining how to access your on line award letter. Your on line award letter will describe your financial aid "package."
  • Grants will be credited automatically to your Riverland account.
  • Workstudy needs to be applied for separately.
  • Loans require a separate application. Regulations require that you complete on line loan counseling and the on line master promissory note. Information on completing this process is available on the Riverland web site or from any financial aid staff person.

 Step 6: Aid Disbursement

Financial Aid is disbursed on the eleventh class day or thereafter.

 Tips For Securing Scholarships
  • Apply! Some students think they won't have a chance so they choose not to act on the opportunity.
  • Meet the stated deadlines.
  • Make sure applications are thoroughly completed.
  • If essays are required, prepare a word-processed document.
