Congratulations to Townsend READING SCHOLARSHIP WINNER Kathryn Johnson
Kathryn Johnson, a College Prep English student, is
Riverland's first winner of a $100 Townsend Press Reading Scholarship.
Kathryn earned the scholarship by reading 10
books, including titles such as "Making the Most of Your Life," "The Story of
Blima, a Holocaust Survivor," and "Letters My Mother Never Read: An Abandoned
Child's Journey."
Kathryn, who pushed her instructor to start the
Townsend Press scholarship program at Riverland, is an inspiration. Thanks to
her, other college prep students will have an opportunity to read for
scholarships.
CONGRATULATIONS,
KATHRYN!!

Survey of
Music
(MUSC 1111, 3 credits) - Weds,
11-11:50am
Haven't you always
wanted to know what Beethovenýs music sounds like, or what's the big deal about
Mozart? Take a tour through the history of European music, from medieval monks
chanting to the opium-soaked musical fantasies of the "Romantic" 19th century,
and all points in between. Along the way, you'll become familiar with the
musical styles of Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Modern
music, and learn the historical background that influenced those sounds. (No
previous musical experience required, so come join us!) Please contact Griffin
Woodworth for more info: Griffin.Woodworth@riverland.edu
Popular
Music in America
(MUSC 1113, 2 credits) ý Thurs,
6-7:50pm
From Tin-Pan Alley
to the birth of Hip-Hop, popular music has been one of the most influential
forces in American culture, binding generations together by expressing emotions
that are both universal and also deeply personal. In this class, we'll hear and
discuss American pop music from Vaudeville through the birth of Jazz and Rock
'n' Roll, and on into Punk and Hip-Hop (among many other styles). As we do,
we'll explore how pop music has the power to communicate truths about both
American society and personal identity, touching upon issues of race, gender and
economic power. Are you ready to ROCK? (No previous musical experience
required.) Please contact Griffin Woodworth for more info:
Griffin.Woodworth@riverland.edu
These course options are open to all Riverland
students (regardless of major) and count towards Humanities/Fine Arts category
requirements.
