College Women's Basketball: Riverland too much for RCTC

ROCHESTER — When Riverland Community College gets a solid inside-outside scoring balance, it can be tough to beat in women's basketball.

The Lady Blue Devils had a perfect scoring mix on Saturday in a 70-51 win over Rochester Community and Technical College in MCAC Southern Division play.

Guard Victoria Larson led Riverland with a game-high 25 points while center Rebekah Aase chipped in with 16.

"We like to work it inside and out and today Victoria was hitting a lot of threes," Aase said.

Larson made all seven of Riverland's 3-pointers. The freshman from Bangor, Wis., was 7-for-11 from 3-point range.

"We needed Vic to hit from behind the arc," Riverland coach Suzy Hebrink said. "We haven't been hitting a lot of threes lately."

"She's a quick enough shooter where she's going to put it up," RCTC coach Steve Hucke said of Larson.

The Lady Blue Devils often have a strong inside game. Aase, Morgan Lindenfelser and backup Nicole Swanson of Spring Valley give the team a strong presence in the paint.

"We usually have a little size (advantage) on a lot of teams we play," Aase said. "So that's nice."

Riverland indeed was able to control the inside and boards against RCTC. The Lady Blue Devils dominated the boards 57-37 and blocked 10 shots. Aase had 15 rebounds and five blocks while Swanson had seven rebounds and blocked four shots.

"They have nice big players," Hucke said. "But you just have to keep going. You can't worry about blocked shots."

"We wanted to keep them out of there (the paint)," Hebrink said. "And that was kind of a point of emphasis, we wanted to have more offensive rebounds."

Riverland had 21 offensive rebounds and had 15 second-chance points to just six for RCTC.

Lindenfelser chipped with 11 points for Riverland.

"To get three people in double figures is where we need to be," Hebrink said.

Caite Vosejpka led RCTC with 16 points while Chanda Reideman added 13.

The Lady Blue Devils led 38-26 at the half and RCTC never got closer than 12 over the final 20 minutes. Larson made sure of that as she hit a trio of 3-pointers in a four-minute stretch, including one that turned into a four-point play after she was fouled.

The win snapped a five-game losing streak for Riverland.

"It was a good win, we hadn't won in awhile," Aase said. "It was a good team effort."

Riverland, which had not beaten RCTC since the 2004-05 season, swept the Yellowjackets this year. RCTC has struggled as it lost its 12th straight. The Yellowjackets (3-18, 0-7 Southern Division) have not won since Dec. 8.

The Lady Blue Devils improve to 13-10, 2-6 in the Southern Division. Riverland hosts Ridgewater on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
