Soccer: Blue Devils finish on a high note

Riverland sophomore Esteban Sebastian ended his men’s soccer career on a high note as the Blue Devils beat Crossroads College 4-0 to close out their season at Wescott Athletic Complex Wednesday.

Sebastian played keeper in the first half, where he stopped six shots —including one from point blank range. Then, he moved to the field in the second half and scored his second goal of the season in the 83rd minute for RCC’s fourth goal of the day.

The Blue Devils (10-5 overall) received a boost from Austin grad Pedro Herrera as he took a pass from Austin grad Dante Ortiz and scored in the 60th minute to make it 2-0. Herrera scored again in the 63rd minute on assist from Rafael Bellon.

Bellon started the scoring with RCC’s lone first half goal in the 34th minute. He scored on a pass from fellow Brazilian Anderson Siqueria.

RCC out-shot Crossroads 33-16.

RCC freshman Jesse Ledesma played keeper in the second half and he made five saves to preserve the shutout.

Since it is playing as a club team, RCC will not compete in the postseason.

RCC soccer player stays busy

It goes without saying that Riverland soccer player Jose ‘Rome’ Parelta-Bartolo is a pretty busy guy.

He’s been on the Blue Devils soccer team for the last two seasons despite never playing the sport before, he’s working a full-time job and he’s taking full semesters of classes at RCC in the nursing program.

Oh, and he also has a 4.0 GPA.

“I kind of say goodbye to my social life during the semesters. Maybe I get one day for myself a week,” Rome, who is a Medford grad and commutes to Austin from Medford on a daily basis, said. “When I set a goal for something, I normally do it. It’s really hard for me to give up or say I can’t.”
