Hall of Fame2005 Inductee Don LeathersBaseball (1971-72) Don Leathers graduated from Austin High School in 1970 after an outstanding career in baseball. He was a two year letter-winner and had the privilege of competing in the state tournament as a senior where his team finished 3rd in the state. Don continued his playing career at Austin Community College in 1971-72 and had a terrific year leading the BlueDevils to Minnesota State Junior College Championship. He led the conference in hitting with a .426 batting average and was selected All-Conference and All-State in spring of 1972. He also was the MVP that year for Austin Community College and was selected the scholar athlete of the year in 1971-72. Leathers went on to the University of Minnesota and received a BA in English and BS in Secondary Education. He has been on staff at Glenville-Emmons High School for 28 years and while there he has coached baseball, football, and girl?s basketball. Don also coached 10 years of summer league baseball in Glenville and 13 years in Austin with the VFW team. During a three year span the VFW team went to the state three years with Chicago Cubs standout Mike Wuertz leading the way on the mound. After 28 years Don is still involved in sports as an umpire in basketball and baseball in the high school league and a baseball umpire at the collegiate level. He is married to Marsha and they have three children; Michael(21), Paul(19) and Cassandra(15 years old). |
