The final week of the regular season is at hand for the Riverland baseball and softball teams.
Both of the junior college teams have put together solid seasons and there's no reason to think it won't continue at the state tournament. The softball team went to state last year, but it's been a while since the baseball team made a trip to the post-season.
Heading into this weekend's doubleheaders against Rochester Community and Technical College, the Riverland baseballers are in first-place in the Minnesota College Athletic Conference, South Division standings.
The Lady Blue Devils softball team is currently in third-place in the division and holding a lock on a state tournament bid. The Riverland women return to the softball diamond this afternoon with a home doubleheader against St. Cloud Technical College in Austin.
Nation's top hitter
The doubleheader today and next Tuesday's twinbill against Rochester will be the last chances the home fans get to see the nation's top hitter for NJCAA, Division III.
Laura Meyer of Riverland is currently leading the country in hitting for NJCAA, Division III teams. She has a batting average of .582 on the season and leads second-place Casey Ord from Northampton Community College by 16 points.
Meyer has 39 hits in 67 at-bats. She has four doubles, one triple, has scored 22 runs, and driven home 12 runs. The most impressive statistic is she's hit safely in all 21 games played by the Lady Devils this season.
"It's been a great season for Laura at the plate, and her hitting has kept us in a lot of games," Riverland coach Dave Lillemon said. "To see her leading the country in hitting is a reward for all her hard work. I'm really looking forward to seeing what she can do in our final series of doubleheaders. We're ready to make the run to state."
