Riverland softball takes two on the road

Apr-15-2009

Post-Bulletin, Rochester MN

ST. CLOUD -- The Riverland softball team swept a doubleheader from St. Cloud Technical College on Tuesday.

The opener was a close one as the Lady Blue Devils of Riverland scored a pair of late runs for a 2-1 win.

Bashing the ball around the diamond, the visiting Lady Devils then completed the sweep with a 9-0 win in five innings. They had 17 hits in taking the final game of the Minnesota College Athletic Conference, South Division twinbill.

Kaylee Newman pitched all seven innings to get the win for Riverland in the opener. Anna Breault then improved to 5-2 on the season with the lopsided win in the late affair.

"Coming off two tough losses on Monday, we had to make a long trip, and the team was flat in the first game," Riverland coach Dave Lillemon said.

"We hung in there and fortunately Kaylee was sharp on the mound. We got the runs at the right time."

The decisive two-run rally in the top of the sixth for the Lady Devils started with a single from Mandy May.

Laura Meyer then tied the game with an RBI double to plate May. After an out, Justine Sanvick walked and the Lady Devils pulled off a double steal.

With runners at second and third, Carmen Smith stroked a single. Meyer scored the go-ahead run, but Sanvick was thrown out at the plate.

This was more than enough offense for Newman, who set the side down in order in the final frames for the win. She had four strikeouts in the win.

In the late game, Riverland rolled with a pair of runs in the first inning. The offense then posted seven runs on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth to shorten the game.

"The defense played well with only on error in the two games," Lillemon said. "The pitchers both gave us solid outings. We really knocked the ball around in the late game and this was a nice sweep on the road."

Riverland (12-7, 6-4 MCAC South) travels to Worthington on Friday for a doubleheader against Minnesota West.
