Blue Devils split but still win division

Apr-29-2009

Post-Bulletin, Rochester MN

ROCHESTER -- The regular season ended with a doubleheader split for the Riverland baseball team against Rochester Community and Technical College on Tuesday.

Riverland 10-runned Rochester in the first game of the doubleheader, winning 15-2 in five innings. The Yellowjackets bounced back with a 13-12 win in eight innings in the second game.

With the split, Riverland tied with Dakota County for first-place in the Minnesota College Athletic Conference, South Division.

"This is the first time in 28 years that Riverland has won a division title, so I'm very proud of the guys for the season they've had," Blue Devils coach Scott Koenigs said. "I'm not so happy with some discipline problems we had and I had to leave a few guys home for this doubleheader. It caught up with us in the late game."

Brian Voigt was the winning pitcher for Riverland in the opener. Voigt is now 4-0 on the season with a minuscule .027 ERA.

Rochester managed only one hit in the first game against Voigt.

The Yellowjackets had 11 hits in the nightcap as Brady Banse took the pitching loss in relief.

Riverland (31-8) plays Ridgewater in the first round of the state tournament on Friday.
