Blue Devils win two more games on southern trip

Mar-19-2009

Post-Bulletin, Rochester MNĀ

COCOA BEACH, Fla. -- The Riverland hitters continue to bash the ball around the field as they seem to be enjoying the balmy southern weather on their spring training trip.

The Blue Devils made it eight wins in nine games during their Florida excursion with a pair of victories on Wednesday afternoon. In the first game, Riverland beat Massasoit Community College out of Mass., by an 18-7 score.

In the late game, the Blue Devils received a pitching gem from Brian Voigt in a 4-0 win over Alfred State College. The Blue Devils defense committed only one error in the two games.

"We're having a really good trip, and the guys are playing solid baseball in all phases of the game," Riverland coach Scott Koenigs said.

"We broke it open with nine runs right away in the first inning against Massasoit. They were the eighth-ranked team in the country for NJCAA Division III, and this was the second time we've beaten them this week."

Andy Behnke led the offense for the Blue Devils by driving home seven runs in the lopsided win. Behnke had a bases-loaded triple and also a double with the bases loaded in the offensive onslaught.

Voigt pitched all seven innings in the late game. He had five strikeouts in the shutout win.

"Brian pitched an extraordinary game," coach Koenigs said. "He got ahead of hitters. The defense made plays because he was throwing strikes and they were on their toes in the field behind him."

Riverland (8-1) plays two more games this afternoon at the Cocoa Beach Expo Center.

The first game (Thursday) is against Cumberland Community College. The late game starts at 4 p.m. against the University of Western Ontario.
