37 Stitches - A Riverland and World Premiere Event
For the first time ever, Riverland Theatre presented an all student production. On January 16 & 17, 2009, 37 Stitches, written and directed student Shane May, made its stage debut. In the words of the playwright: “37 Stitches is a play about life on the fringe of society and reality. It is about love and loss, redemption and pain. It is art imitating life at its darkest where the gun acts as god machine wrapping up the inevitable tragic end.”

Acting Out!
On May 4th, the Advanced Acting/Audition Techniques class will present an evening of entertainment including scenes, songs and monologues from their two years in the Riverland Theatre program.
This capstone project is a culmination of their work on the Riverland stage and in the classroom that will lead to receiving an Associate in Fine Arts degree in theatre. Students participating: Jessica Beske, Austin; Miriam Crow, Waterville; Kelsey Seifert, Austin; Andrew Conway, Austin, Alex Johnson, Blooming Prairie; Brenden Troster, Albert Lea. The event begins at 7:30pm and will include up to 75 minutes of entertainment. It is free and open to the public. |

Riverland Music News
Riverland’s music practice rooms are getting a facelift. A two-toned color scheme, carpeting, mirrors, and sound-absorbing material have been added to three of the practice rooms. Another is being used to solve a long-standing problem. For many years, instrumental students have had no storage space for their instruments. The E100-A practice room is being converted into instrumental storage with lockable Wenger cabinets. One cabinet is designed specifically for guitars, while the other can hold a variety of instruments.

Focus on Alumni
James Peter Williams, former Riverland Theatre student and graduate of the cosmetology program, has made his way to California and is loving every minute of it. Originally from Waseca, James appeared in many productions while attending Riverland. He played the King in The King & I, J. Pierpont Finch in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Snoopy in You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown and was in several other Riverland productions. He appeared in alumni shows Into the Woods and Company. He was also very involved in ensembles within the Music Department.

Riverland Faculty Notes
Susan V Hansen, theatre instructor at Riverland, is completing her Master of Fine Arts in Acting at MSU Mankato this spring. She is currently performing in The History Boys as Mrs. Lintott, and will perform her thesis project in June as three different characters in Neil Simon's Plaza Suite. Last Fall she performed in Lysistrata as Myrinnha and designed costumes for Cloud Tectonics. She recently competed in the Region V Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival in Kansas. Susan teaches Beginning Acting, Intro to Theatre and Film, and Stage Makeup.
