Urinetown, the Musical
Book by Greg Kotis
Music by Mark Hollman
Lyrics by Greg Kotis & Mark Hollman
One of the most uproariously funny musicals in recent years, Urinetown is a hilarious tale of greed, corruption, love, and revolution in a time when water is worth its weight in gold. Set in the not-so-distant future, a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20 year drought, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. Amid the people, a hero decides he has had enough, and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom. An outrageous satire that leads to laughter, and more then just a little truth, Urinetown shows what a musical really can be.
Recommended for ages 14 and up.

My wife and I attended the Riverland production of URINETOWN - THE MUSICAL this afternoon and found it absolutely delightful! A talented and energetic ensemble captured the dramatic and musical challenges of a difficult text and score with a power, charm, and intelligence achieved far too seldom in educational theatre at any level! For the fun-seekers, there is music, dance, and comedy. For the droll sense of humor, there is rich parody of virtually everything from Dorothy Gale and Annie Warbucks to Andrew Lloyd Weber and to the very structure and conventions of the musical theatre. For the student of the human condition, there is intelligent (if irreverent) musing on the nature of freedom, business ethics, political revolution, and even the Malthusian Principle. For the lover of curiosities and unique experiences. . .well, what more evidence does one need than the title?
Congratulations to all. . .but most profound and enthusiastic congratulations to the teacher/directors who designed, coordinated, and directed this accomplishment. This is precisely the level of artistic challenge and achievement that a truly educational arts program must weave into the tapestry of student experience at the college level, both for its performers and for its audiences. Bravo!
