Course Information
The Challenges of Advanced Steels
--This presentation will explain the results of the year-long research project taken to investigate what the use of exotic metals such as boron means to fire and rescue personnel.  Following the five-part series of articles in Firehouse Magazine, this presentation explains what the metal is, where the metal is, and how to work with it or work around it. As special emphasis this year is placed on alternative or backup techniques that might be necessary if you cannot cut through Boron at a crash scene.  Participants will find out how to determine if their department’s cutter can handle the task.

Hybrid Vehicle Update--New 2009 and 2010 model hybrids will be discussed.  Several brand new models have high-voltage batteries in unusual locations plus several actually have household duplex receptacles built into them to provide 120-volt power inside the vehicle.

Highway Safety--This presentation has been updated for 2010 and will address the newest government requirements for cones, deployable signs, and high-visibility clothing for responder when working in or near moving traffic.  Find out why firefighters have to be ‘vested’ out on the street.
