Riverland Generations sponsors "Making Love Again: Hope for Couples Facing Loss of Sexual Intimacy" and "Emergency Preparedness for a Healthy Generation" in January

Riverland Generations will sponsor the presentation "Making Love Again: Hope for Couples Facing Loss of Sexual Intimacy" on Saturday, January 24, 2009 from 9 to 11 a.m. at Riverland Community College Austin West Building commons. The event is co-sponsored by the Austin Medical Center. Admission is $5. Pre-registration is not required.

Keith and Virginia Laken share the intimate story of their struggle with erectile dysfunction as a result of an illness. The Lakens will lead a discussion regarding their own experience as well as the sensitive issues surrounding the impact of impotence on relationships. Following the initial program, separate breakout sessions for men and women will allow for free conversation and in-depth reflection. A spouse/partner is not required to participate in this session. Each participant will receive a free copy of the Lakens' book "Making Love Again."

Nationally renowned presenters Keith and Virginia Laken, married for 37 years, have spoken to groups of couples and medical professionals about their experiences overcoming sexual dysfunction. Their story details the arguments and the frustration they experienced in dealing with his impotence, and how their marriage ? and intimacy ? has grown stronger with each passing year. The Lakens have presented at the Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center and other medical schools and conferences.

Riverland Generations will also sponsor "Emergency Preparedness for a Healthy Generation" on Thursday, January 29, 2009 from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Riverland Community College Austin West Building, room A237. The presenter is Jane Knutson, Mower County Public Health Planner. Admission is $5. Pre-registration is not required.

This is an activity-based workshop at the end of which participants will be well on their way toward having a personal preparedness plan and gathering needed supplies for emergencies.

Jane Knutson, public health planner, is responsible for managing Mower County's annual Emergency Preparedness Grant. She is involved in National Incident Management Systems (NIMS) training, Homeland Security Exercise and Evaluation Programs and with the Medical Reserve Corps.

Generations programming is in collaboration with KSMQ public television. KSMQ will televise "The Hidden Epidemic: Heart Disease in America," Sunday, January 11, 2009 at 8 p.m.

How can a seemingly healthy 44-year-old suddenly drop dead from a massive heart attack? His case is not unusual, as the 90-minute documentary explains. More than half of all people who die of heart disease succumb suddenly without warning-and the other half have the disease lurking in their bodies for many years before it strikes. There is no cure, but doctors are making remarkable discoveries about the disease: where it starts, how it occurs, and what that means for us. Program producer Elizabeth Arledge also produced "The Forgetting," the acclaimed PBS special about Alzheimer's disease.

Riverland Generations is a personal education experience designed for the mature learner to inspire learning for living. Generations programming is tailored to the interests of participants ages 55 and over.
