Myth Busters
Myth #1 "Colleges won't accept me because I had poor high school grades"
BUSTED! Riverland Community College is an open enrollment college.
This means if you apply, pay a $20 application fee, and prove you graduated from high school - you will be accepted.
Myth #2 "I need to take the ACT or SAT to be accepted to college"
BUSTED! Riverland Community College, like all technical and community colleges in Minnesota, does not require you to take the ACT or the SAT. Although, if you are trying to decide between a technical
and community college and a four year college or university, you may want to take the ACT or SAT.
Myth #3 "I won't get any financial aid"
BUSTED! Everyone is eligible for some type of Financial Aid. Each student is awarded a package of financial aid made up of Grants, Loans, or work-study funds. Grants are money that does not have to be paid back. Loans must be paid back, but not until six months after you graduate. Work-study is a program that lets students work on or off campus for $8.00 per hour up to 15 hours per week. Students who work at a workstudy job receive a normal paycheck every two weeks during the semester.
Myth #4 "It is not worth it to go back to school"
BUSTED! Did you know, on average, a person with some college will make over one million dollars more in their lifetime than a person with only a high school diploma? College is a great investment!
