 Overview
The Alliss grant is an opportunity grant designed to help adult learners begin college or return to college. The grant is not based on family income and is available to all Minnesota community college students who qualify. Grants are available to start school any term.

 Grant Description

The grant provides payment of tuition for one course -- up to five semester credits -- and also covers the cost of required textbooks for that course. To qualify, the selected course must be part of an Associate of Arts (A.A.) or Associate of Science (A.S.) degree program. Certificate and diploma programs are ineligible as are on-the-job and customized training courses.

The grant is not reusable. If a student withdraws from a class under the Alliss grant program, that person cannot receive the grant again.

 Program Eligibility

Grant recipients must have been out of school for at least seven years. They may be first-time community college enrollees who graduated from high school at least seven years ago or former college students who haven't been in college for seven years.

Recipients must not hold baccalaureate or higher degrees. They must be legal Minnesota residents; those with reciprocity status are not eligible. Students who have applied for, or are already receiving financial aid or subsidized credit are excluded from the program.

 Application Procedure

The applicant should complete the certification form, as well as the application form required by the college for admission. These forms should be mailed or dropped off at the College Admissions Office, along with the required application fees. Applicants may also apply and register in person during open enrollment. The grant covers tuition and books for one class but not other student fees. Students may register and pay for additional courses.

Alliss grant applications are accepted only prior to class start dates.

To qualify for the Alliss Grant, you must be:
    • a Minnesota resident
    • have been out of high school for at least seven years
    • either enrolling in college for the first time, or I have not been enrolled in any college for at least the past seven years have not earned a bachelor's degree or higher
    • the selected course must be a transferable course that would be accepted as an integral academic part of an A.A., A.S., or A.A.S. degree program, or a preliminary or developmental level course if it is required to start a degree program. Certificate and diploma programs are ineligible as are on-the-job and customized training courses.

 Please note the following:
    1. An Alliss grant will be for one semester only.
    2. The grant will be limited to one course.
    3. An Alliss grant will cover tuition and books for up to five (5) credits.
    4. Applications are accepted only prior to the class start date.
    5. The student must not have applied for financial aid prior to submitting the Alliss grant application.
